John Robshaw has been working with this Jaipur artist since his earliest trips to India, collaborating on one-of-a-kind pieces that feel as much like paintings as they do pillows.

The work is inspired by pichwai, a traditional art form dating back to the 17th century, often painted on cloth for temple use and deeply connected to nature. The artist learned to paint from his uncle and believes that every pillow should say something.

Elephants are a favorite subject alongside tigers, parrots, and peacocks, each brought to life with a distinct sense of character. Every piece begins as a hand-drawn sketch on paper, then is carefully traced onto fabric and painted entirely by hand.

The process is slow and deliberate: each pillow takes at least ten days to dry, and during the rainy season, it can take up to a month.

Each season, John Robshaw releases a limited collection of these hand painted pillows, bejeweled elephants, magnificent tigers, spirited parrots, and mesmerizing peacocks, each one a true work of art.

Our Technique

John Robshaw collaborates with a Jaipur artist to create hand painted pillows inspired by 17th-century Pichwai art. Each piece begins as a sketch, then is painted on fabric, featuring elephants, tigers, parrots, and peacocks, taking days or weeks to complete as true works of art.
